A Review of the Dyson DC17
One thing that I truly enjoy is writing reviews, so I thought I would take
some time to learn a bit about vacuum cleaners. Virtually everyone has had a need for a vacuum cleaner at
least once in their lifetime, but most people are not aware of how to go about choosing the right one. Believe
it or not, it is not all about the price tag.
There is a lot to a vacuum cleaner that can make it beneficial to you or leave you needing more. You have to
take into account the many features and benefits that the vacuum comes with as you try and decide which one will
best meet your needs. Price may be a factor, but it should not be the most important one. As I set out to research
vacuums I came across the Dyson DC17 and decided to learn more about it.
What should you look for in a Vacuum?
No two vacuums are the same. Each one will have its own set of features and benefits that help it to stand apart
from the competition. It is when you combine these features that you will be able to tell whether the vacuum you
are considering is the right one to meet the needs you have. There are a few standard things that you should always
consider when you look at various models of vacuums.
• What type of suction does it get?
• Does it take a bag?
• Does it include a HEPA filter?
• How much does it weigh?
• Are there any attachments?
• How long is the cord?
When you look at various models of vacuums you will take these features into consideration based on what your
particular cleaning needs may be. For this review I will detail how each of these features relates to the Dyson
DC17.
What is the Suction like?
The suction is the most important feature on any vacuum. This is what guarantees that the dirt, grime and pet
hair that linger on your floors will be picked up by your unit. Dyson measures the suction on their vacuums by air
watts. The Dyson DC17 measures at 220 air watts of constant suction power. This places it among their more powerful
models.
The added suction allows the vacuum to pick up more. Because it is a multi-floor vacuum, it is considered safe
and effective on all surfaces. As is the case with many of the Dyson models, this one has Root Cyclone technology
that ensures it does not clog up or lose suction power while you are cleaning.
Does it Use a Bag?
One deciding factor for many in a vacuum is whether or not it uses a bag. Vacuums that use bags require that you
consistently change the bag in order to see top quality results. This adds an expense to your vacuum as the bags
cost money to continuously replace. The Dyson DC17 is like most Dyson models and is bagless. This means that there
will never be a bag to replace and there will never be bags to purchase. A simple push of the button will empty the
contents of the canister into the garbage and allow you to continue your cleaning.
Does it Contain a HEPA Filter?
Many models of vacuums are now incorporating HEPA filters as a way to minimize allergens in the air. These
filters will trap dust, allergens and pollen and prevent them from being released into the air. The Dyson DC17 has
a lifetime HEPA filter that will not need to be replaced like many filters do. This will save you time and money
over the years as you need only keep the filter clean. In addition, this filter ensures that the air being released
from the vacuum has 150 times less mold and bacteria than average breathing air. This is why this particular model
has been certified as allergy and asthma friendly.
How Much Does it Weigh?
This is not going to be the most lightweight vacuum that you could purchase. At 20.79 lbs, the Dyson DC17 is a
heavier model that provides a lot of power behind it. It is still light enough to maneuver through various rooms,
but you might find it a bit heavier to carry up and down stairs if you must do so frequently.
What Attachments does it come with?
You can reach extensive distances with the wand of the Dyson DC17 that stretches out to 17 ft high. In addition
to this, the vacuum also comes with a brush tool, stair tool, crevice tool, mattress tool and dusting tool.
Is the Cord Long Enough?
When you are in the middle of cleaning it is difficult to have to unplug and start over because you run out of
cord. This is why the cord length can be an important part of your vacuum decision. With a 35 ft cord you are
guaranteed to be able to cover a much larger space with the Dyson DC17 than you would with many other vacuums.
What is the Going Cost?
The average cost of the Dyson DC17 is around $320 but you can get one on Amazon for as low as $299 at any given
time.
What Comes with It?
The Dyson DC17 comes with the vacuum, the standard attachments and the user manual.
Is there a Warranty?
Dyson offers a parts and labor warranty on their vacuum cleaners when they are purchased new. Most products
receive a five year warranty from the company.
What Do Others Say?
Looking through the various sites that offer reviews of the Dyson DC17 it is obvious that customers are quite
happy with their purchase. Users boast about the power behind this vacuum and the amount of dirt and other objects
that it was able to pick up. A small sampling of what people were saying include:
• “2 Types of Wow”
• “DC17 is Amazing”
• “I am a believer”
• “I’ve been walking on these carpets?”
• “Amazing doesn’t even come close to describing!”
Has anyone complained?
A small amount of people noted that the vacuum they purchased had mechanical problems rather quickly. There were
some that felt the price was too high for the quality. The most notable complaint was that it was not handy for
those who had to navigate and vacuum stairs on a regular basis.
Where Can You Buy It?
Virtually every online retailer has the Dyson DC17 available for purchase. It is currently sold out on some
sites such as Target, but is available on others such as Best Buy. However, the best price to be found is on
Amazon.
Where Can You Read Reviews?
If you want to read solid reviews you can visit any retailer that offers the vacuum for sale. The most
comprehensive list of reviews by those that have given the Dyson DC17 a test drive can be found on Amazon.
